The Shell Science Teaching Award recognizes one outstanding K-12 teacher who positively impacts their students and community through exemplary science teaching. The winner receives $10,000 plus an all-expense paid trip to the NSTA National Conference in Spring 2026.
The Shell Urban Science Educators Development Award provides support to K–12 classroom science teachers in urban settings who are pursuing professional development and serves to increase the science educator talent pool in STEM to meet the education workforce challenges of the future.

Governor’s STEM School Designation Application Open Now!

The Governor's Office of Science, Innovation and Technology is charged with identifying and awarding recognition to schools in Nevada, each year, that demonstrate exemplary STEM learning environments. Such schools are designated as Governor’s STEM Schools and are honored at an annual recognition event. Designation as a Governor's STEM School denotes that the school meets the highest standards of STEM instruction and is a model for schools around the state.

Once designated, schools join the Designated STEM School Network wherein they access professional learning, networking, and funding opportunities.

Applications for the designation are due December 5, 2025 by 5:00PM PST.

STEM Teacher of the Year Applications

As the State continues to diversify the economy by recruiting STEM industry, Nevada’s education systems are providing high-quality and career-connected STEM learning experiences to students. Nevada’s students are acquiring STEM skills, mindset, interests and identities that will propel them and the State forward. The STEM Teacher of the Year Program will recognize individual leaders’ impact on the State’s STEM education and workforce goals.

Each Regional STEM Teacher of the Year and each Regional STEM Advocate of the Year will receive a certificate from the Governor along with a digital seal and a swag bag from OSIT and NDE. Regional winners will be recognized at their school site or organization and invited to their designated Regional STEM Network convening to accept their award.

The Nevada STEM Teacher of the Year and the Nevada STEM Advocate of the Year will receive a certificate from the Governor, a digital seal, a swag bag, and a monetary stipend of $500. The winners will be presented with their award at their school site or organization.

Nevada Teacher Mineral Education Workshops

The Nevada Mining Association (NVMA) and Nevada Division of Minerals are committed to providing teachers with knowledge and tools to assist them in providing quality K-12 earth science instruction. NVMA and the Division of Minerals host two earth science workshops annually, one in Southern Nevada and one in Northern Nevada. These workshops focus on a broad range of earth science topics, including mineral and rock identification, rock formation, geologic processes, the importance of mined materials, and the role that mining plays in 21st-century lives. Teachers are provided tools for accurate, standards-based science lessons. Workshops include tours of operating mines and geologic sites of interest.

Reno - April 2-3, 2024

The workshops provide:

The opportunity to receive professional development credit
The ability to share earth science knowledge with peers

The Nevada Division of Outdoor Recreation is pleased to announce the application is now open for the Nevada Outdoor Education & Recreation (NOER) grant program. $250,000 in funding is available for youth outdoor education and recreation projects in Nevada. Eligible applicants include local, state, and tribal governments, schools, nonprofit organizations, and community groups.

Zion National Park in Springdale, UT is looking for a Teacher Ranger Teacher for the summer. They are specifically looking for middle and/or high school teachers.

The Zion National Park cohort is July 10 - August 20, 2022.

There are THREE requirements for all participants in the TRT program:

A minimum of 160 hours of service to your National Park site.
Successful completion of the graduate course: TRT Field Experience: Place-Based Education on Public Lands
1. This is a three-credit hour class, which requires 45 contact hours. Graduate course guidelines indicate that for each contact hour, 2-3 hours of readings and activities are typical. Most of these additional hours are achieved through the TRTs National Park, but TRTs should plan on 3-4 hours per week for course readings, assignments, and discussions.

Reno & Elko Robotics Educator Training

Robotics Academy of Nevada Educator Training in Elko and Reno (Elko June 13-15, Reno on June 17-18, and Las Vegas June 2-4).

As of today, we have over 50 educators planning to attend this inaugural event in Elko June 13 – 15 (hosted at Great Basin College) and over 100 signed up in Reno. If you know anyone who would like to attend, please share widely! We are excited to reach and support our rural and Northern Nevada teachers and educators with STEM and robotics education! We have over 300 teachers signed up statewide (and half are up north)!

This training is free and open to teachers and any youth serving professionals who are new to educational and competitive robotics designed for kids grades PK-12. We have 7 different courses you can choose from - both FIRST and VEX robotics.

What you get in addition to PK-12 robotic training:

All teachers (both in-service and pre-service) and youth-serving professionals can earn PD hours or attendance stipends $200 or $400.
Eligible public/charter schools may qualify for a New Team Stipend ($300) by starting a new competitive robotics team or adding a new platform to a school that does not currently have a team
Eligible public/charter schools may qualify for free robots from FIRST Nevada or the REC Foundation (VEX robots)
Travel stipends (up to $500) are available for those educators who travel more than 50 miles to the training site.
Access to our free Robot Lending Library (RLL) post-training as we have over 200 robots to share across the state.

HS Climate Science Opportunity with BSCS

BSCS Science Learning seeks teacher collaborators for a research project funded by the National Science Foundation. The Climate Education Pathways project is a collaboration between BSCS Science Learning, Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Our project aims to enhance teaching and learning of climate change for high school science and we are recruiting high school biology, earth science, and environmental science teachers to take part in our project. Teacher-collaborators will field test a 6-8 week digital high school science unit about climate and biology developed for the NGSS. Teachers will be supported in localizing the unit for their students and community. Teachers who are a part of the field test have the opportunity to be paid up to $2,700 over the course of 1.5 years (January 2023-May 2024). Springs Preserve's SPRINGBOARD video series for Grades 4-12

The Springs Preserve SPRINGBOARD Virtual Learning Program has two, new, exciting products for the classroom – flyer attached. These products are for 4^th – 12^th grades.

A new video focused on drought in Southern Nevada - Drought: Our Water Resources and Community Response. The video covers the issue of drought specific to our region. The SPRINGBOARD program also includes an opportunity to schedule an expert for a virtual classroom visit and supporting materials in teacher toolkits for grades 4-12. To schedule an expert and/or request access to our Teacher Tool Kits, click here. Expert availability is limited.

It's important to note that students must watch the video, review vocabulary words and formulate thoughtful, topic-related questions prior to meeting with an expert. Our experts do not teach the subject matter, they provided an opportunity for students to ask questions and explore the topics further.

A Drought Activity Kit offered to teachers at no cost. The kits contain tools to engage students in an experiment with plants and water, including a gift card to purchase the plants needed for the activity.

The Northern Nevada Science & Technology Festival Needs Volunteers

The NNSTF needs volunteers for our Science is Everywhere and Signature Events during the week of April 26-30, 2022.

A Northern Nevada Science & Technology Festival (NNSTF) volunteer will provide support and PR for NNSTF events. The duties include attending assigned festival events, promoting other festival events to attendees, and general assistance to event personnel.

The requirements for volunteering for the NNSTF include being courteous and personable when dealing with attendees and event hosts, being dependable, punctual, self-directed and willing to take initiative. The NNSTF will provide you with a volunteer T-shirt denoting your invaluable assistance during the festival.

Southern NV Earth Day - Big Dune

I am planning an outreach event on Earth Day and I am looking for CCSD teachers (as well as college students that are planning to be teachers, or that are interested in biology careers) that would be interested in attending an event to learn about dune beetle ecology at Big Dune. Teachers and college students would get to participate in research activities being conducted by UNLV, learn about the ecology of the Giuliani's dune scarab beetle, and experience what it might be like to be a field biologist for a day. The hope is that teachers will share information about the experience with their students and incorporate it into a lesson about science, research, or science careers, and inspire students to have an interest in science. I am also willing to come talk to their classroom if it fits into their lesson. Long term, I hope that by having first-hand experience to draw from, teachers will be better equipped to make science lessons more interesting and relatable to students.

This event will be on April 22nd, with a possible second day on April 23rd. Transportation will be provided. We will be traveling to Big Dune Nevada and conducting research activities including collection of observational data of beetle behaviors, and collecting environmental and behavioral data during a short experiment manipulating the light conditions that beetles are exposed to.

I am aware that this experience will not appeal to everyone due to the late hours and the fact the "bugs" are not everyone's cup of tea. This timing is necessary because the beetles are only active and observable during a short window each night around sunset, and we need travel time to get to and from the dune. If you are very afraid of insects you may not want to come on this trip, but rest assured that these beetles do not eat food as adults, and biting is not something that we have ever experienced from them. It is quite an experience to see the beetles all emerge from the sand in unison and watch them as they hover around all of the surrounding shrubs against the backdrop of the sunset. It all feels very magical. I am looking for adventurous teachers that like the outdoors, have an interest in biology, and want to use their experience to inspire their students.

CCSD coordinates the "Science in Schools" portion of this weeklong event. We work to bring in STEM professionals to as many classrooms/schools as possible during the week. Teachers are now invited to sign up to request a STEM professional for their classroom(s) or school during that week. Please check the dates before you sign up. If you do sign up and are assigned a speaker, it is expected that you will follow up with the speaker to schedule an appropriate time for their visit. If you are assigned a speaker and do not follow up and/or cancel, you will be jeopardizing further partnership opportunities.

UNLV Engineering GenCyber Camp for HS Students

NSSTA Member & Class National Finalists in Samsung's Solver for Tomorrow Challenge

Congratulations to Steve Gaskill from K.O. Knudson JHS in Las Vegas and his students who were just named national finalists in Samsung's Solve for Tomorrow Challenge. They get $50,000 and a trip to New York to pitch their idea to Samsung!

Their project was to design better bus benches for the Las Vegas summers. Their solution was to replace the RTC's current steel benches with benches out of concrete made using recycled sunflower stalk aggregates. This was one of the top ten finalists in the country.

The Regional STEM Networks’ High-Quality STEM, Equity and Awareness Subcommittees publish new tools

The Regional STEM Networks’ Subcommittees, in collaboration with OSIT, have developed a collection of Nevada-specific tools using research and rigorous independent evaluation. A High-Quality STEM rubric was developed to provide guidance for measuring the quality of STEM programs. The Equity tool compiles best practices regarding increasing equity in STEM. The Awareness tool provides examples of how various stakeholders can increase awareness of STEM, the benefits of STEM, and local STEM opportunities.

31st Annual Southern Nevada Earth Science Education Two-Day Workshop.

The Nevada Division of Minerals and the Nevada Mining Association would like to invite you to join us April 12-13 for the 31^st Annual Southern Nevada Earth Science Education Two-Day Workshop. This PDE training is completely free and provides the opportunity to earn one PDE credit. The two-day workshop will take place in-person at Faith Lutheran Middle School and High School located at 2015 S. Hualapai Way, Las Vegas 89117 (see map below). We are offering two fun-filled days of rocks, minerals, and mining. On day one, participants will spend the day rotating between five classroom sessions. Two of the sessions are required for all participants and the remaining three sessions offer a variety of electives so participants can choose the topic best suited for their grade-level curriculum. On day two, attendees will participate in a grade-level breakout session to collaborate with other teachers on how to adapt the material for use in their classrooms. After which participants will depart on one of three field trip options to active mine sites and/or areas of geologic/cultural significance. Masks will be required on the bus for the field trip. If you have a business that does cool science and can open your doors to the public for a free tour, demo, or workshop, this is for you. Science in Schools (May 2 - 6, 2022): STEM Professionals will be matched with a classroom or school to share their work with students. We need more than 100 speakers this year for any grade level. Your commitment could be as short as 1 - 2 hours on one day or as long as multiple hours over multiple days, depending on your availability. If you sign up to participate in this, we will work hard to connect you with an appropriate school(s) and teacher(s). Giant Expo at the World Market Center (May 7, 2022): This hands-on expo is expected to have more than 10,000 visitors this year. UNLV SISTEM - HS Students

High school students are invited to apply for the Spring 2022 SISTEM (Student Interactions with Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) program. This program, sponsored by the UNLV Howard Hughes College of Engineering, is a series of talks and hands-on activities that will allow high school students to learn about careers and research in STEM. Through five engaging sessions, participating students will be able to connect with STEM professionals in various fields. Completion of the program will be a great addition to a student's academic resume. Applications are being accepted until February 25th. Participants may choose between attending in person on the UNLV campus (limited number of spaces) or attending remotely by Zoom. High school students outside of southern Nevada may sign up to attend remotely. There is no cost to participate, but students who are accepted into the program are expected to participate in all five sessions which are held on five Wednesday evenings in March/April.

The NV Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest is underway for 2022, and we invite you to participate! Contest is open to youth through age 18 (K-12) and celebrates waterfowl conservation through the arts.

The Federal Junior Duck Stamp Conservation and Design Program is a dynamic art- and science-based curriculum that teaches wetland and waterfowl conservation to students in kindergarten through high school. The program encourages students to explore their natural world, invites them to investigate biology and wildlife management principles and challenges them to express and share what they have learned with others.

Our Winter BioBlitz is back and it starts TODAY! This friendly competition is the entire month of December and involves all NDOW staff, volunteers, interns and seasonals, also Nevada teachers. The goal is to observe as much wildlife, plants, insects, tracks, etc. anywhere in Nevada through the smart phone app iNaturalist (Apple App store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/inaturalist/id421397028; Google Play store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.inaturalist.android&hl=en_US&gl=US). And yes – there will be a prize for most observations! (Flyer is also attached and below.)

What is a BioBlitz?

A BioBlitz is a chunk of time where participants observe as much wildlife as possible – wildlife sightings, insects, plants, tracks… all of the above! This year, the BioBlitz includes the entire month of December and if you join the Project online – anything you observe in Nevada will count! Join the Project here: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/ndow-winter-bioblitz-2021. (If you are new to iNaturalist, you will need to create an account before you join the BioBlitz project.) This is free to anyone and starts today - on December 1 and lasts until midnight on December 31!

How do I make an Observation?

It’s easiest to make an observation through the iNaturalist app (Apple App store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/inaturalist/id421397028; Google Play store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.inaturalist.android&hl=en_US&gl=US). But, you can also upload your observations through the website: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/ndow-winter-bioblitz-2021.
Once you’ve created an account and joined the Project for this year’s Winter BioBlitz (https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/ndow-winter-bioblitz-2021), on your smart phone with the app open, hit “Observe” at the bottom of your screen. You will be prompted to take a picture with your smart phone or upload a picture. Afterward, you can hit “What did you see?” to check out what the app and the iNaturalist community thinks you saw. Select your best guess and hit “SHARE” at the bottom of your screen. As long as you have location sharing toggled on your app pr your phone, everything will be added to the Winter BioBlitz Project automatically. This data is useful to citizen scientists all over the globe and is corroborated and viewed by anyone who might be studying biodiversity or wildlife populations.

Springs Preserve's SPRINGBOARD video series for Grades 4-12

The Springs Preserve's SPRINGBOARD video series brings their water and habitat experts into the K-12 classroom through live, real-time, virtual meetings. SPRINGBOARD is designed as a multi-media educational resource. Students can explore a topic through our videos and toolkits and then engage in a virtual classroom visit with one of our working experts. These are real people (scientists and policy makers) who work on everything from tortoise habitat to water conservation programs. We are currently promoting our water-focused videos/experts. SNWA Youth Conservation Council Application

The SNWA’s Youth Advisory Council is now the Youth Conservation Council! This new council will give students an opportunity to earn community service hours and gain valuable experience while learning about real-world, water issues. It will run from January to April 2022, culminating in the Earth Day 2022 event at the Springs Preserve on April 23^rd. Attached and below is the promotional flyer, with a QR code that will lead them to an informational page and an interest form.

Interest forms must be submitted before December 15, 2021. Limited spots available.

More About the Youth Conservation Council

The YCC is a highly-engaging community service program that invites high school students throughout Southern Nevada to examine the inner workings of resource management through the organizational efforts of the Southern Nevada Water Authority, Las Vegas Valley Water District and the Springs Preserve. Students in the program will learn about the challenges of water sustainability in Southern Nevada and explore the design solutions necessary to address those challenges. The 16-week program includes subject-matter guest speakers, on-site Spring Preserve explorations and field trips, as well as opportunities to conceptualize conservation solutions (engineering and science), explore potential conservation programs, develop ideas for educational outreach and social media campaigns and assist in the planning and hosting of a large-scale Earth Day event held at the Springs Preserve.

While focused on water sustainability, the YCC explores all the work that goes into resource management. So, it’s a great opportunity for STEM students but also students who are deeply interested in sustainability but whose academic strengths may lead to a future in government, law, communications, public policy, public outreach, etc. I think this is a perfect opportunity for high school science teachers to identify those students who show great interest in sustainability whether or not STEM is their jam.

Participating students will:

· Earn community service hours

· Learn about Southern Nevada’s water source including supply and demand

· Discover the science and engineering behind water treatment, delivery and conservation

· Evaluate market influence in shaping public engagement policies

· Identify challenges in water conservation strategies

· Create interactive public engagement opportunities (event booths and pop-up classes at Springs Preserve, K-5 classroom activities)

· Volunteer with Springs Preserve Education Team

· Plan and execute Earth Day Event at Springs Preserve

My name is Nora Mathison, and I’m the senior editor of a new podcast called Lost Women of Science, in partnership with PRX and Scientific American. Each season explores the life and work of one woman who has made significant contributions to a scientific field, but who has nonetheless been overlooked.

As a nonprofit educational initiative, a big part of our mission is to inspire students, particularly girls and young women, to pursue careers in STEM. It is vital that we connect with a young audience, and we need your help doing that.

We just launched the first episode of Season One, about Dr. Dorothy Andersen, a pediatric pathologist who was the first to identify cystic fibrosis in 1938. The season’s four episodes chronicle Dr. Andersen’s fascinating life and important work, and also explain the science of the disease she studied. We think it is a fantastic—and very entertaining!— learning opportunity.

We hope you’ll share the Lost Women of Science podcast with teachers in your association, and hope that they in turn will find a way to incorporate it into their science curriculum.

OSIT has released four grant funding opportunities to strengthen STEM in Nevada.

The K-5 STEM Classroom Grant provides up to $1,500 per classroom for teachers to purchase high-quality STEM education materials.

Applications are due December 17, 2021.

The K-5 STEM Program Grant provides up to $20,000 per school to implement school-wide programming and/or training for programs on the STEM Advisory Council’s List of Recommended STEM Programs.

Applications are due December 17, 2021.

The Workforce Talent Pipeline Development Grant has $500,000 available to create training programs provided by consortiums of secondary education, postsecondary education, and Nevada’s STEM industries.

Applications are due January 17, 2022.

The Workforce Challenge Grant has $500,000 in funding available to create workforce training programs for in-demand, industry-recognized STEM skills.

NASA Lunabotics Junior Challenges Students to Design Moon-Digging Robots

NASA seeks young engineers to help design a new robot for an excavation mission on the Moon. The Lunabotics Junior Contest, open to K-12 students in U.S. public, private, and homeschools, starts accepting entries on Wednesday, Oct. 20, and runs through Jan. 25, 2022. The competition, which is a collaboration between NASA and Future Engineers, asks students to design a robot that digs and moves lunar soil called regolith from an area of the lunar south pole to a holding container near a future Artemis Moon base.

“Developing mining capabilities on the Moon will require innovation and creativity, and students are some of the most creative thinkers,” said Mike Kincaid, NASA’s associate administrator for the Office of STEM Engagement. “The next generation always brings new perspectives, inventive ideas, and a sense of optimism to the challenges NASA puts in front of them. I’m really looking forward to seeing the designs they submit to Lunabotics Junior.”

NASA’s Artemis missions are returning to the Moon with the first woman and first person of color, and will create a long-term human presence that will serve as a springboard for future Martian exploration. Lunar regolith is instrumental in this development, and could be used to create lunar concrete, reducing the amount and cost of materials that need to be transported from Earth. Artemis Student Challenges such as the Lunabotics Junior Contest create unique opportunities for a diverse group of students to contribute to NASA's work in exploration and discovery while celebrating their creativity and innovation.

To enter the contest, students must submit by Jan. 25, 2022, an image of the robot design and a written summary that explains how the design is intended to operate on the Moon. While students are not tasked to actually build a robot, they are asked to envision a robot design that is no larger than 3.5 feet by 2 feet by 2 feet and addresses three main design features: how the physical design of the robot will enable it to scoop/dig and move the lunar regolith, whether the robot will operate by moving large amounts of dirt per trip or transporting less dirt in more trips, and how the design and operation of the robot will meet the big challenge of lunar dust that is stirred up and can “stick” to surfaces when lunar regolith is moved.

Students can sign up individually or teachers can register their entire class. Entries will be split into two categories – grades K-5 and grades 6-12. Ten semifinalists will receive a Lunabotics Junior prize pack and four national finalists from each category will win a virtual session with a NASA subject matter expert. The national winner from each category will be announced on March 29, 2022, and will be awarded a virtual chat for their class with Kennedy Space Center Director Janet Petro. The Triangle Center for Evolutionary Medicine (TriCEM) is gearing up for a "Darwin Day Roadshow" this February, and we want you to be a part of it!

What is the Darwin Day Roadshow?

To celebrate Charles Darwin's birthday (February 12th), scientists hit the road to bring evolutionary science to schools and communities. For 2022, we are offering in-person visits in North Carolina* and virtual visits anywhere in the United States.

Our teams talk to students, teachers, and the general public about their research, career opportunities in science, and why evolutionary science is relevant to everyone. These visits are completely FREE, and we even leave behind a collection of resources to enhance the teaching of evolution in the classroom.

What is a typical Roadshow visit like?

We work with host teachers (i.e. you!) to design an event that best serves their school and community. There is no "typical" visit; both the topic and format are flexible to meet specific needs.

How do I apply?

WestEd HS Research Opportunity

WestEd, a non-profit educational research agency, would like to invite high school teachers to access a free online peer assessment tool called Peerceptiv (https://www.peerceptiv.com/why-peerceptiv-overview/k-12/). Peerceptiv is a tool that allows students to receive quick and actionable feedback from their peers. The purpose of the study is to test a prototype of the tool and get your feedback about how helpful and useful it is in supporting classroom learning in science.

WestEd is inviting high school teachers to join a research study that will examine the feasibility of the online peer assessment tool. The study will take place sometime between October through November 2021 (we would schedule a time that works best for you and your students). The benefits of the study are that teachers can use this innovative tool for free during the study. In addition, the tools are based on learning science research that suggests that students' learning is enhanced by engaging in the peer assessment activities, which the tool facilitates. Finally, teachers would receive a stipend of up to $300 for participating in the study.

Let's Go Fishing! at Lake Mead Program

The National Park Service, Nevada Department of Wildlife, and Get Outdoors Nevada are proud to host field trips for schools to support the "Let's Go Fishing! at Lake Mead" program.

Get Outdoors Nevada will cover the cost of a charter bus. Students will be taught basic fishing techniques and all about the amazing underwater wildlife at Lake Mead. Students will also earn their Jr. Angler badge!

All fishing equipment is provided. Fishing is catch and release only. Field trips are scheduled for November 2021.

The Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum (The Discovery) is embarking on plans for statewide outreach in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Our aim is to help provide engaging STEM education, aligned with state science standards, to students in schools and communities across Nevada.

It is important that we decide which programs we bring, and where to provide them to reach the audience who most needs or wants them, based on feedback from as many teacher, para-educators, principals, and other educator professionals as possible. What aspects of STEM might you appreciate from outside providers? What types of outreach programs would be most convenient for your school or most effective in the context of your curriculum? International Day of the Girl Celebration - Las Vegas

EnergySmart Education Theater Program - 2nd & 3rd Grade Classes

This year DRI is once again bringing back Lazy Lou with the EnergySmart Education Theater Program thanks to our grant from Southwest Gas Corporation.

Performances will be offered virtually to ensure the safety of the students, staff, and performers as we continue to navigate the COVID-19 situation. The focus is on 2^nd and 3^rd grade classes in areas that receive service from Southwest Gas Corporation.

The 15-minute pre-recorded video performance will tell the story of Lazy Lou, who is so lazy that he is a perpetual energy waster. Luckily, he meets a group of scientists who help him understand the importance of conserving energy. Together they help Lazy Lou become a more thoughtful and efficient consumer of energy.

Important Information: Our goal is to schedule at least 20 virtual performances through the teachers’ Google Meeting platform that can be projected in individual classrooms or run on individual Chromebooks. Following the pre-recorded video will be a Q&A with one of the actors. The total time with the video and Q&A will be approximately 30-40 minutes. Available timeslots can be found HERE and are offered on the hour throughout the week. If allowed by the teachers/school, it would be ideal to schedule multiple classes at once and have them all be in the same Google Meet. This way we can include as many classes as possible within our limited timeslots.

We also have some supplemental material to provide to the classrooms, as well as an online survey for the teachers to provide feedback on this energy conservation program.

Performances will be held October 18-22, 2021.

We are excited to share this with you and look forward to seeing you in one of our performances!

The Conservation District of Southern Nevada invites all public, private and home schooled students in grades K – 12 to participate in the annual National Association of Conservation Districts 2021 Poster Contest with the theme “Healthy Forests, Healthy Communities.” See the attached documents and the links below for tips, rules, required consent form, and additional information.

Grade level categories include K - 1; 2 - 3; 4 - 6; 7 - 9; 10 - 12.
Entries and signed entry forms need to be submitted to the Conservation District of Southern Nevada at cdsouthernnevada@gmail.com no later than 27 October 2021.
Entries and signed entry forms must be submitted digitally as photographs or scanned copies in a JPEG format.
One selection will be made in each grade group to be submitted to the Nevada State Association of Conservation Districts and one selection in each grade group at the state level will be sent to the National Association of Conservation Districts.

Call For Entries: Stormwater Pollution Awareness Month Poster Contest

Elementary Students In Nevada May Enter Starting Oct. 1

Elementary school children in grades K-6 across Nevada are invited to participate in the Stormwater Pollution Awareness Poster Contest Oct. 1-15 to honor Stormwater Pollution Awareness month this October.

Clark County Water Quality has teamed up with the Nevada Department of Transportation, Southern Nevada Water Authority, and the LV Wash Coordination Committee to raise awareness around the fact that in Nevada, anything that goes down the storm drain goes directly into local waterways without treatment.

See attached flyer and the website linked below for full information. Entries will be accepted Oct. 1 – 15^th, and the winners will be selected on October 22^nd. The posters will be featured in a 2022 calendar with the first-place poster appearing as the cover art. Winners will also receive swag bags and 10 copies of the 2022 calendar for family and friends. Calendars will be distributed to participating elementary schools across the state.

All art must be drawn by hand (not computer-generated) in permanent marker, crayon or paint on an 11x17 piece of paper.

Participants may choose between attending in person on the UNLV campus (limited number of spaces) or attending remotely by Zoom. High school students outside of southern Nevada may sign up to attend remotely. There is no cost to participate, but students who are accepted into the program are expected to participate in all five sessions which are held on five Tuesday evenings in Oct/Nov.

New NASA Challenge Encourages Hands-on Student Tech Development

NASA will initiate a new competition for the 2021/2022 school year, providing student teams a chance to design, build, and launch experiments on suborbital rockets and high-altitude balloon flights. NASA and Future Engineers, the challenge administrator, will offer a series of virtual events for educators to hear from agency experts and learn more about this exciting opportunity for students.

The NASA TechRise Student Challenge will begin accepting entries in August. Teams of sixth- to 12th-grade students can submit ideas for climate or remote sensing experiments to fly on a high-altitude balloon, and space exploration experiments to fly aboard a suborbital rocket.

The winning teams each will receive $1,500 to build their payloads, as well as an assigned spot on a NASA-sponsored commercial suborbital flight. Balloon flights will offer more than four hours of flight time, while suborbital rockets will provide around three minutes of test time in microgravity conditions.

"This competition is an exciting opportunity for students across the country, whether they're already passionate about space exploration or looking for a new challenge," said Jim Reuter, associate administrator for NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD). "Student teams will get hands-on experience creating and building their own experiments and then get to see them fly to suborbital space, just like NASA engineers and university researchers."

The contest aims to inspirea deeper understanding of Earth’s atmosphere, space exploration, coding, and electronics, as well as a broader understanding of the value of test data. The challenge will also allow students to engage with NASA and technology communities, and expose them to potential careers in science, technology, and space exploration fields.

Before the competition opens in August, educators can hear from NASA experts and learn more about the opportunity through a series of virtual activities.

The challenge kick-off event, part of the Department of Education’s eighth annual ED Games Expo, will occur Tuesday, June 1, at 6 p.m. EDT. Educators can register to participate in the event. The two-hour session will stream live at:

“NASA is committed to providing students with hands-on experience and real-life problems the agency faces,” said Mike Kincaid, NASA associate administrator for STEM engagement. “These challenges are a fun and educational experience for the future STEM workforce to develop the necessary skills for NASA to continue to be successful. I am confident they will go on to accomplish great things.”

NASA is working with three flight providers to support the competition. The student payloads will fly on one of the following:

Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket
UP Aerospace Inc.’s SpaceLoft rocket
Raven Aerostar’s Zero Pressure high-altitude balloon

The NASA TechRise Student Challenge will be open to student teams affiliated with U.S. public, private, and charter schools, including in Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and all other U.S. territories. Title: Extreme Heat and its Impact on Environmental Injustice

Duration: June 1st - June 30th

Description: In this 4 week program, students will conduct research on the effects of temperature on workplace safety for outdoor workers under the guidance of Ms. Keehu of Coronado High School and Dr. Erick Bandala of the Desert Research Institute. Teams of 2-3 students will be assigned one city in the Southwest or South East. Students will collect and analyze data from the US Department of Labor and DRI Climate Engine. Data from all cities will be combined to create a scientific paper and poster presentation.

This summer, The Southern Nevada Section of the American Chemical Society will serve as a research site for ACS Project SEED, a paid summer internship program for two economically disadvantaged high school students in Southern Nevada. Student interns will use their artistic abilities to make graphic novels about Chemistry.

Project Title: Chemistry Graphic Novel

Duration: 10 weeks

Project Description:

Chemistry can be a difficult area of study for most high school students. In recent years, graphic novels have become popular among teenagers. The goal of this project is to create a new mode of learning through graphic novels that will increase student engagement and understanding of chemistry. Students will learn about a unit of chemistry, then create a graphic novel to teach all of the concepts within that unit. The product will be at high-school level, align with the Next Generation Science Standards, utilize real world data and examples and incorporate assessments. If there is time, additional units will be created.

Eligibility: Economically disadvantaged high school students. One year of Chemistry is preferred, but not required.

Students who participate in this program will receive a stipend as well as resources to create the graphic novel including:

CCSD teachers will receive extra duty pay of 4 hours for each event and level supervised (1 hour to log into the Science Olympiad online testing platform and preview the test prior to the competition, 1 hour for proctoring the event, and 2 hours to grade the tests and turn in the final scores).

The BackyardBio global nature campaign (https://www.backyardbio.net/) is being run through the non-profit Exploring By The Seat of Your Pants ( https://www.exploringbytheseat.com/).

This May, as a fun, engaging and socially distant friendly activity, they're partnering with groups worldwide on encouraging the public and especially classrooms to get outdoors to more closely connect with all their local biodiversity.

By photographing what they discover and sharing their images on social media (#backyardbio), the INaturalist platform (https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/backyardbio) and through direct connections with other similar aged classes worldwide the hope is to foster a love of wildlife that spans countries and continents.

Lab-Aids Free Science Teaching Webinars

The webinars will be held every other Thursday, from 3:30 to 4:15 PST. If you can’t make it, you can still register to receive a recording.

Clark County School District 7th Grade Science Teachers Only

The M-PLANS (Motivation Planning Lessons to Activate eNgagement in Science) project is currently working with 7th grade science teachers in CCSD and Michigan to design and develop a teacher professional learning (PL) experience to support science teachers in creating a more motivating and engaging experience for students in their classrooms. The project is seeking additional 7th grade science teachers to join in this work for the 2021-2022 school year.

February 21-27 is Engineers Week, which is an annual opportunity to celebrate the contribution of engineers and spread awareness among educators, parents, and students about the importance of STEM careers.

In honor of Engineers Week, our team at Horrocks Engineers has created a kid-friendly video series that explores simple engineering concepts through everyday questions. Although we would love to volunteer or present in local schools, communities to encourage students to explore STEM, we recognize that opportunities might be limited this year due to COVID-19. Please consider this video series our contribution to inspire the engineers of tomorrow and share it with your educators if you think it would be valuable to them. 2021 Inspiration Awards - Nominate an 8th Grade Female Student

The National Center for Women & Information Technology(NCWIT)'s Nevada Affiliate is pleased to announce the 2021 Inspirations Award.

The goal of the award is to encourage and inspire middle school girls to become aware of and consider pursuing careers in Technology and STEM career fields.

Middle school girls can be nominated or directly apply for the award thru March 1st.

Nominations can be made by a counselor, teacher, parent, family member, or any community person over the age of 18.

In addition, 8th-grade female students can directly apply for the award using the same link below.

Final selections will be made and the girls will be notified by March 8 so that they can attend the Virtual NCWIT Awards Ceremony on April 24 with their family. All nominators are encouraged to attend as well.

These one-of-a-kind LIVE virtual events bring students and educators out into field with scientists and professionals to bring engaging topics virtually right to your computer or device. The National Atomic Testing Museum Hosts an Activity Demonstration and Conversation with UNLV’s Tech Trekker

Join the National Atomic Testing Museum for a special presentation featuring Dr. Erica Marti, Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction, and STEM Ambassadors from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Dr. Marti and the STEM Ambassadors will be discussing the Tech Trekker program and demonstrating a “Solar-Powered Fan and Light” activity. Using a photovoltaic panel, this activity explores the energy transfer from the sun into electricity and then from electricity to motion and light energy.

Applications are now open for the Joint Science and Technology Institute (JSTI) summer programs!

For high school students and current high school STEM teachers, JSTI is a two-week research experience. The middle school JSTI program lasts one-week. The goal of JSTI is to provide students and teachers with an opportunity to engage in hands-on activities, team building, and research projects mentored by professional researchers while also gaining exposure to various STEM careers.

There are JSTI opportunities in two locations: New Mexico (JSTI West) and Maryland (JSTI East). Eligibility for each program is different.

Join Albert Einstein Distinguished Educators at NASA Rachael Arens and Michael Guarraia on March 4, 2021 for a freestyle conversation and workshop with the NASA AEROKATS and ROVER Education Network (AREN) to learn how to use NASA technologies and practices in authentic, experiential learning STEM environments. Members can partner with the NASA AREN Project to access kite-based “AEROKATS” and remote-controlled aquatic and land-based “ROVERS” that collect remotely sensed Earth observations that students can graph and analyze!

Through this program, educators gain the opportunity to work with NASA scientists and learn real-life protocols and field operations conducted by NASA! This webinar is suitable for all grades K-12.
